If you want to feel like the artist is in your living room then this is the place for you. I must admit it is always a bit of a squeeze, but you can be sure that everyone else your rubbing shoulders with is a music lover just like yourself!!! "

I live in birmingham and have been twice only....the best 2 nights ive ever had at a concert, rahsaan patterson, and jon b.
No where in the midlands would book acts like that, so I spend £50 on fuel, £45 entry, plus drinks and food etc, but get to see an act I love.
I'm pretty sure the venue doesnt make money from every act they book.
Enjoy the music and use the toilet in your house before you leave.
I'll be back this tuesday for rahsaan part 2.

It was there first gig in 23 years and everyone there seemed to know all their songs word perfectly. It was a small crowd, but what a great atmosphere. There was enough buzz to convince any non-believers that Any Trouble should be given a proper tour and some genuine radio play again.

The sound was ageless and perfectly played by excellent musicians. Awesome."

I was at the Jazz Cafe last night for Joe Driscol and was overwhelmed by the amazing One Taste Collective and all the artists that made up the show. If you ever get a chance to see these guys it is a real treat their improvisation is unlike anything i have seen in years. to top it off MC Xander was outstanding and Joe Driscol was even better than the last time i saw him the live looping is something that has to be seen.

please look up the play list from last night as there were so many performers and i would recommend them all."

Seemed to be incapable of picking up on the mood, and when he had the place rocking, went back to playing the theme from Ivor the Engine, or similar. Maybe it's what the sheep like."

Loose ends gig was the worst gig I have ever been to. I have been a fan of Loose Ends ever since their first tune "We've Arrived" back in 1982. I have everything they have ever done. I was so disappointed last night (4th Oct 2007). They came on at 10:30 had an awful session singer who missed her queue 4 times during Hanging on a String and they played the same tune 3 times, 1 of which was an encore. They then wrapped by by 23:20. I was heartbroken to see what I consider as the ambassadors of British Jazz Funk take a dive in front of a classless drunk crowd. The sound in the venue was like a car stereo with the doors shut, you could not hear vocals and the crowd were so tightly packed into the venue that it was totally uncomfortable. Loose Ends did not even come on stage to a round of applause. They came on stage with less appreciation from the crowd than the warm up acts. Probably because people were fed up of waiting and were probably expecting a short late show by this point. all this for a £20 ticket with a 25% booking fee added on ! The Jazz Cafe has lost it's edge in my opinion. Booking fee is not justified, bar staff useless and they should have more of a say on how the acts time themselves so that punters will want to come back. I for one won't be. Especially after seeing the rip off prices for Angie Stone (£40). I could be sitting at the indigo in the O2 for that money."

"The look from outside and the review were suggesting me to expect a very stylish review with great attention to details..

I also expected a jazz venue to have lots of table and seats, I expected an arena!!!!..a bit like a comedy club venue: I think jazz is best enjoyed if sitting comfortably, maybe while eating a romantic meal.

Instead I walked into a very rustic venue.. just two big tables far away from the stage and two little high tables pushed onto the wall on the side of the stage.
The toilets are so badly decorated and the bars very uncomfortable to stand by..

With all the money coming in from gigs they could do a lot better..

Friends and I attended this on Monday 27 August 2007, and wow! What a fantastic night it was! Freddie was absolutely brilliant and I still get goose bumps recalling all the hits he sang. It was only then that we fully appreciated how many great songs he has done over the years, and how effortlessly his musical abilities have crossed boundaries, decades and musical styles.

The tribute to Dennis Brown was particularly poignant. Let me know when he is performing again and I will definitely be there!!"

"Went to see the James Taylor Quartet; Absolutely amazing! Gig started at just after 9.00pm, and including the 3 begged-for encores, lasted for just under 2 hours. A great night out. Fantastic sounds, great atmosphere. P.S. having read other reviews - didn't use the WC's! Bottle of dry white wine cost us £13; very reasonable we thought. Staff very friendly and helpful."

"Cymande music is very special, and I believe concerts like this will bring Nyah-rock into the 21st century.

Cymande All Stars did a Stellar job, capturing the sound of the early 70's West London nine piece combo. The original drummer Sam had every reason to be proud. Flanked by newer talented musicians who did an amazing, performing every phrase and
nuance of those early Janus LP's. My hat goes off to the conga player who managed to keep the crowd going for a long time, as the rest of the band left the stage, only to return intact to play out the final funk of "Brothers On the Slide", without missing a beat.

It was a very warm armosphere. Fantastic encore's which focused on the well known "Bra" and "The Message", and it is amazing how familiar and classic these songs sound coming from such an original "Nyah-Rock" band."

"I had the opportunity to visit Jazz Cafe for the first time on march 26 2007 to see the Mighty Diamonds who performed well. My only criticism is the accoustics.

Reggae music should be played with lots of bass and a clear
top end, and this was not the case on that evening. I plan to visit other acts again and hopefully I will be able to conclude that it was just that particular evening. "

"Jazz Cafe is a intimate venue with a soulful atmosphere. The lasting memorys that I have of this venue is when i went to see Jazzy Jeff and the Philharmoincs back in 2004. The night was amazing and it was perfect evening for me and my friends.

I plan to go again shortly and having read the other reviews about the condition of the toilets, i personally would not dine there. I would also suggest, that you dont drink too much, so that you can avoid using the facilties, that they refer to as a TOILET! otherwise its great! oh and sort the bouncers out- very doggey wid too much attitude :-) "

"What a venue!!! As soon as you walk in you can feel the intimacy of the place. It's only a small venue considering the acts that play there so naturally we were pleasantly surprised at the size of the place. The crowd was so diverse and everyone was loving the performance of the well known musician known as Nitin Sawhney.

He rocked it with his side kicks on a night that was filled with that tingling sensation you get down your spine when you know something good is happening. When he was done the place turned into an awesome club with some very very good music. All in all a great venue and an awesome atmosphere. Will be back soon.

Oh and if you're going to a more acoustic gig then I'd definitely pay the extra for the seats in the restaurant upstairs. "

Every time I've been there, my friends and I have the same experience: awesome music but crushingly dangerous bottlenecks between the entrance-facing bar and the stage venue area - and how the local council have allowed them to get away with their cruddy toilets for this long is a mystery. Covered in slime and other health-endangering bacteria, they're an insult made even worse considering the high admission prices. "

"Guru was really dissapointing! I thought the show would be soulful and jazzy but he was aggressive, self-important and I would never go and see him again!

Food was nice but far too small a portion for the price. The place is really cool however and I love the atmosphere - I would definitely go there again - just not to see Guru!"

"I've been to the Jazz Cafe on several ocassions... living in the midlands we rarely get the chance to see some of the acts that perform at the jazz Cafe.

On Saturday 1st July I went to see kyota Jazz Massive which I really enjoyed, despite the concert lasting a little over a hour and me paying some £42 for two tickets (including booking fee).

My biggest moan is the acoustics in the place... Awful! You would have thought that after all these years the venue would have had a face lift by now and the sound improved, it was really bad.

Another big minus point about the Jazz cafe is the toilets... disgusting! There are a health hazard! Dirty, small and in serious need of a major facelift.......Keeping it 'real' does not mean that we have to go to dirty, squalid venues, we live in the 21st century now.

To the owners of the Jazz cafe....sort it out! Your customers...and your acts deserve better."

"What a breath of fresh air, saw raison d'etre last night - fantastic evening, made perfect by amazing singer - prema and her band. So much energy, great funky sound. And loved DJ Healer Selecter's wicked tunes.

Drinks not too expensive, responsive audience, just great to see some fantastic new music."

It was my first time...and I think it will be my last time...

I've been in many venues over London and Paris and really I was really disapointed about The Jazz Cafe...WHY?
Because I paid £15 for one hour concert which I think it is stealing....
The Bays was excellent but just for an hour...Come on!!.. I thought it was a joke at first... I mean on the ticket they say, "doors opened at 7pm"... for what.. nothing.. no music at all... very expensive drink.. no atmosphere...

I am really disapointed and because I am working with a lot of Venues Website, Im gone give the Jazz Cafe the reputation it deserved...."

Where most jazz venues stick to traditional jazz with the odd experimental band thrown in for good measure The Jazz Caf? takes in the farthest reaches, even lining up dance music from the likes of Royksopp, loads of great soul acts and old favourite singer/songwriters. I love it for being so diverse, so chilled out and so unlike other venues in London. Well done Jazz Caf? for being the best place in town!"
