From what is known about this drinking hole, The Prince Albert was once called an ‘old man’s pub’ (and there is nothing wrong in that) but being located in trendy Camden, it could be an issue. In keeping up appearances, The Prince Albert has undergone a major makeover…far from a lick of paint, this pub is no longer the frog but the Prince.

Now extended in to two tiers, upstairs offers a spacious dining area sprinkled with wooden tables and chairs. Downstairs, on the other hand, is less formal with comfy leather sofas, big screen TV and a convenient garden area for smokers. Interior wise, The Prince Albert reeks of the usual, mundane features of gastro-pub décor – mauve walls, chalk boards and chandelier-esque lighting. Then again, this is a pub that has welcomed customers since 1843, so I am sure the monotonous interior could be easily overlooked.

"From it's past years languishing as an old man's boozer i was pleasntly surprised to find this pub fully brought up to proper standards!

The food's great and the menu seems to change regularly, whilst they serve decent wines, international lagers and real ales - a great place to have as a local!!

If only more places like this were in Camden!

"I live locally to The Prince Albert and have long awaited a great place to drink/eat in my area. I have been coming here regularly with my partner for months now. Am disappointed in some of the comments here because I have never found anything but praise for this pub along with it's staff.

All new venues have their hiccups to start, improvement has done greatly here. The menu you will not find the like of which, in another gastro pub in Camden. David Gill the Chef, know's how to put flavours together to make an inventive menu . Although the menu. I have not found a more tasteful inventive food of this caliber in any gastro pub within Camden. The presentation alone (especially desserts) have a pedestal of their own!
The Sunday lunches here are plenty and absolutely FABULOUS!

I have never experienced this 'condiment' thing that others have, nor have I ever witnessed it. The staff have only ever been helpful and polite.

This pub has a great wine/beer list and regular tastings along with weekly events. It is fast becoming a busy addition to the Camden Scene.

"This place is fantastic. Was there last Friday and could barely get in the place, and little wonder. They run two menus: bar and restaurant, both equally as impressive from what I could see. Plus a specials board that I'm reliably told by a local friend of mine changes on a regular basis.

Classy restaurant set-up on the first floor and laid back ground floor bar. Service was friendly and helpful. Food was great. I had the rabbit pie, my partner the turbot. Desserts were divine.

Excellent value for money when you consider some of the ingredients they are using."

"I have never subscribed to a review site - until today that is. But, I had such a disappointing evening at this so-called gastro-pub last night, that I feel compelled to inform other prospective customers.

I had arranged to meet a dear friend inside the pub - our plan being to catch up on the past month's news while eating some decent food. If we wanted to be deafened by loud rock music and served by surly, 'couldn't-care-less' staff, I know plenty other pubs in Camden that could fit this bill. The Prince Albert, however, excelled at both.

When we asked if the music could be turned down, as we were trying to have a conversation (not an unreasonable request, given the place is now marketed as a place to eat) the barman had to ask me to repeat myself 3 times, as he couldn't hear my request!

The music was turned down a notch for about five minutes, before being racked up louder than before. As we were the only two customers in the whole of the pub, I have to assume the music (a Bon Jovi number!) was being played to entertain us. We weren't. We left.

Starving, and with our ears ringing, we dragged our weary bodies over to Crown and Goose where we inhaled a quite decent meal in civilised, quiet surroundings. "

"What a great job they've done in transforming this pub! It's a lovely space both downstairs bar, outside area and upstairs restaurant.

We eat upstairs in restaurant and had very nice food but it was very quiet for a Saturday night and deserves to be busier. The staff need some basic training. They were friendly but our waitress was clearly lacking restaurant experience. Music was also a little wierd - but at least not loud. But overall, nice experience and will definitely go back.

Hope the place is successful. A little fine tuning and they'll get there."

"I was not happy with this place.

I waited for 40 minutes for a main course and when it came it was almost cold, was also surprised with the way the staff held onto the mustard when they could of just left it with us.

Food was not so bad if it would have been hot.

The wine however was full of flavor and very nice.

Strange staff seemed to want to keep asking if you are ok when they should leave you in peace really.

Not such a bad place but it's not my cup of tea."

"I have been going to this pub over the last few months and although initialy the service and staff were having the usual hiccups usually associated with a new venture things have greatly improved.

The food is excellent especially the Sunday roasts and the dining area on the first floor is a real treat.

I would have no trouble in recommending this pub for either a quick drink or an evening out with fine food."

"Was very impressed by the way this old local boozer has been transformed. It now offers a very comfortable verging on the cool ambience and food both in the bar and the upstairs dining room. Have been going there for a few weeks, as I live down the road, and service seems to be getting through its initial teething problems and is becoming quite slick. Food has improved greatly with changes in the menu - recently chose rabbit and mushroom pie and mash from the specials menu: very good, as was the chocolate brownie. This chef is one to watch. Little touches in the bar like home-made pork/duck scratchings on the menu and olives out on the tables for free will win this place friends. "

"This pub reopened this summer and I live really close so I wanted to really like it. The downstairs pub part is fine and there is a nice enough outdoor area. I have gone there for drinks there a few times now. but we had dinner in the upstairs gastropub part the other night and I can't quite recommend it. first of all, it's a sit down restaurant with quite formal service - which is not that uncommon for gastropubs I suppose but not necessarily the norm either.

It was clean and the decor was nice enough. There was none there other than us at about 19:15. In the time we were there, only two other tables got occupied.

The food we had ranged from a dry and disappointing foie gras to reasonably tasty but forgettable main courses. we did not stay for dessert.

Prices are about £4-7 for starters and £9-17 for mains. Given the quality of the food, this was not good value.

The service was the oddest part. The staff seemed to be having teething problems, yet at the same time, rather condescending. We all felt uncomfortable throughout and (not that it matters) we were not dressed shabby or behaving in any remarkable manner. it's hard to describe the experience, but a few incidents stick out: 1) the waitress was quite shocked that we wanted to share a starter and asked about 4 times whether that's what we really wanted, rolling her eyes; 2) when I chose to just drink sparkling water, I was asked over and over whether I was sure I didn't want another drink, a juice or something (I did not want to have alcohol that evening and I do not drink juice); 3) the oddest, after our food arrived the waitress brought over a plate with little dishes of mustard, tomato sauce and mayonnaise asking if we wanted any. we thought she would leave the plate, but when she just stood there holding the condiments we realised the idea was to pick out as much as we needed and put it on our plates with tiny spoons while she held the plate in her hand, hovering. Mind you, these were not fancy sauces, just mayo, mustard etc so we did not expect such a ceremony about it. Anyway we felt awkward all of us having to have her hold the plate as we slowly moved bits of condiments onto our plates and we asked she could leave the plate with us for a moment. She put it down condescendingly. I never had such an experience, especially not with standard things like tomato sauce... and I do eat out a lot.

Oh and 12.5% service was included in the bill...
