These plays were first collected and written down by Karl Julius Schroer, who was one of Rudolf Steiner's teachers. They came from a community living on the island of Oberufer on the Danube, and had been passed on by oral tradition since the Middle Ages. They represent a unique survival of the tradition of medieval mystery plays.
