Ben Taylor – our gig reviews

feature

Ben Taylor is the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, so it is fair to say music runs in his blood. However, he has been busy making a name for himself in his own right, even if his voice sounds uncannily at times like his father.

This was Ben’s first ever headline tour around the UK, having last been seen in touring with Tracy Chapman and, separately with, James Morrison. He has also just released a critically acclaimed album 'Tales of the Cities'.

We asked our writers, Paul Walters in Manchester, Steve Simpson in Brighton and Rachael Dallimore in London, to go along and review Ben on different dates throughout his UK tour and see if he measures up to the hype…

Paul Walters reviewing from Manchester Academy – Feb 1

Steve Simpson, reviewing from Brighton’s Komedia – Feb 5

“Once we are underway it is clear he has inherited his father’s velvety tones, at times the similarity is uncanny. On a more contemporary note there is also an element of Jack Johnson’s warm, rich harmonies in his delivery. Delicately written songs pour forth, sensitively crafted ballads finely interpreted. Rachael Dallimore, reviewing from Islington’s Bar Academy in London – Feb 7

“A cover of Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’ goes down a treat, whilst a quick jam of an Amy Winehouse hit also pulls in the applause.  His acoustic songs are well-penned and enjoyable, but somewhat monotonous after a short while, although his wit certainly counters that. One woman heckles “We love you Ben!” to which the singer-songwriter retorts “And I love you too…  But I do feel the need to see other people!”
