DR – Bedside Manners

Release date: Out now

Format: Album
Genre: Electropop
Our Rating: 3/5

This upbeat album of well built tracks is a pleasure – dance beats mixed with melodic harmonies, strong bass with delicate subtleties.

Opening with the dirty synth disco of Disco King this album is alive from the start, layering strong beats and a variety of synths to create a funky, fun, high tempo jive.  Moving through the album the strong melodies of Circus, the funky floor stomper that is Rollerskates, and the electro-indie of Bright Eyes, engages with its audience, tapping into different moods as it juxtaposes a mingling beauty with high tempo electro.

Bossanova Blue is a beautiful instrumental that feels like a lazy summer afternoon.  Still Got Time struts it’s 80’s disco spirit with as much glitter as Jake Shears, whilst Let the Music Play combines a fat electro bass with an old style piano tinkle, drawing similarities to Basement Jaxx’s Do Your Thing. The album rounds off with Telepathic, gently building from beats to a beautiful love song – balladic save for the sustained funk and energy.

Each track builds up and rounds off well.  Each track, pitched with excitement seems to come in saying “we’re going to rock you, and you’re going to enjoy it”.  I did.

Review by Emily Kate Stephens

Press release:
Following on from their original digital smashes Still Got Time and the beautiful Circus, DR are back with a full length digital album offering chock full of melodic funk-tinged uber-cool electro that is certain to fill the dance floors and prickle the backs of many a neck.

This is an album where great heartfelt song writing meets sparkling electro / dance programming in new and wonderful ways.

Written over 2 years and recorded in a variety of different locations, Bedside Manner sounds as great spun at a club as it does beating out of a chilled Sunday morning stereo, taking the listener on a journey through addictive electro-indie (Still Got Time, Circus, Bright Eyes, Butterfly) dirty house-break-lead floor stompers (Disco King, Let The Music Play, I Heart Rollerskates), and piano-filled heart-rending love songs (Long Time To Wait, Telepathic). There’s even time for an icily cool instrumental for good measure (Bossanova Blue), with everything tied together by impassioned vocals, keen programming and DR’s love of a great song that transcends scene.

With their 80’s-style synth line, hook-laden modern songs and dirty bass, DR have been said to sound like the outcome of a dirty one night stand between New Order and Mylo.

Their previous projects received plays and props from the likes of Pete Tong, Fatboy Slim, DJ Sneak and Groove Armada, and have opened for the Prodigy and Bjork, as well as toured around Europe and the US when in Supercharger; DR are veterans of dirty dance beats that get the crowds foaming at the mouth for more.

DR partnered with pioneering film director Chris Newberry who has supplied an award winning short film to feature as the accompanying video to the single Circus. (see it here http://uk.youtube.com/DRmusicTV)

Shot on location at the Minnesota State Fair, the Circus video is based on a childhood nightmare that transcends time—losing your parent in a crowd. In the film, an eight-year-old girl wanders lost amid oblivious adults and bizarre attractions. When she serendipitously meets a younger boy who is also lost, the children instantly form a bond and together hatch a clever plan to find their parents.
