Top Mind and Memory Boosters

Healthy advice by www.cyberspacehealthclinic.co.uk

Are you the sort of person who is constantly writing little post-it notes to remind you of meetings, appointments and commitments you've made? Living in today's climate it's not really surprising - often there's barely time to breath, let alone stay in total contact with our busy work and social schedules.

There is a growing need for better mental performance to fit our multitasking modern lifestyles. In response, a range of herbal and nutritional mind boosters have burst onto the scene to help us with this problem. Here is our quick guide to these top mind and memory boosters:

Choline
Choline is a natural constituent of brain cells, and is a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It leaves you feeling more alert and clear-headed with better memory and concentration. Take as Lecithin, Phosphatydil Choline, or a Choline supplement.

DMAE
DMAE is a compound which exists in brain tissue which declines with age. It is a precursor to Choline and helps make acetylcholine. It makes you feel more alert, improves concentration and reduces anxiety. It is available to take as a supplement (take 100-300mg/day).

Phosphatydil Serine
This is known as the memory nutrient, and has a profound effect on improving memory in the over 45's,and also in the treatment of Alzheimer's. However, it is also useful for younger people to take to offset age-related memory loss. PS is the building material for neuronal membranes and receptor sites, and improves mood, memory, and resistance to stress.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
These are essential components of the cell's membrane, and increase acetylcholine and serotonin production - thus being implicated in reduction of depression. Taking 250-500mg of fish oil supplement or oily fish x3 a week, can help with learning, memory, mood, depression.

L-Carnitiine
A fat-burning amino acid, L-Carnitine works as fuel for the brain, helping to make acetylcholine and acting as an antioxidant helping to keep the nervous system youthful. It improves mood and mental performance. Take 250-1500mg per day, without food.

Ginko Biloba
This herb has been used for memory enhancement in the East for thousands of years. It improves circulation of blood to the brain, and acts as an antioxidant improving memory, mood, concentration and energy. Take 100-160mg a day of standardised extract.

Vinpocetine
Derived from the Periwinkle, Vinpocetine improves blood flow and circulation to the brain. It improves cognitive performance, and may be helpful in the treatment of Epilepsy. The RDA is 10-40mg per day.

Vitamin B Complex
Of all the vitamins and minerals, B Vitamins have the most important role to play in ensuring optimal brain function because they are vital at delivering oxygen to the brain and protecting it from free radicals. They also turn glucose into energy in the brain cells, and help to keep neurotransmitters in circulation. Aim to take the RDA daily.
