Alan Bennett

  • Profession: Writer and Dramatist
  • Place/Date of Birth: Leeds, 09 May 2020

Biography

Alan Bennett was born 9th May 1934, and is one of Britain’s favourite writers and dramatists.

A butcher’s son from Leeds, he is an intensely private man despite being a consummate public performer. His privacy is less sacrosanct than it was however, thanks to the fact that he has published a volume of his own diaries. Like so many others, Bennett got his first foot on the stage (and pen to paper) with ’Beyond the Fringe’ at Oxford in 1960 where he was contemporary with Jonathan Miller, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Two years later, they brought their successful show to Broadway. He is an accomplished playwright, actor and director, Bennett has alternated working for the stage, screen and TV.

His best-known, and many would say his most artistically successful work has been on much-maligned TV. His Talking Heads series was loved by critics and public alike with its poignant portrayals of society’s unglamorous outsiders. Other hits include ’A Private Function’, ’Prick Up Your Ears’ and ’The Madness of King George’.

In 1990 he was made an honorary graduate, given to him by the University Of Leeds.
He lives in Camden Town.
